Viagra speaks for him-self
If ever there has been a brand name which most adult people can identify instantaneously, it is Viagra. After 12 years from inception, there is no prize for guessing what it does. Viagra helps you get an erection when you are lovestruck. It’s been a boon for millions of men suffering from erectile problems. The masculine vigour associated with the branding of Viagra makes it popular among men of all ages.
Introduction
Erectile problems have been plaguing males for ages. Earlier it was believed that lack or total absence of erection was entirely a psychological problem and has no therapeutic cure. But advancements in biological and medicinal sciences explained the phenomenon of erection thoroughly – relaxation of penile blood vessels on sexual stimulation, increased circulation of blood inside the penis and erection. Any glitch in the first two processes would affect the third, so you won’t get an erection, or even if you get one, it won’t be as firm as you would have liked it to be.
History of Viagra – sildenafil
Viagra has sildenafil as its active ingredient. This compound was first tested in Pfizer’s lab in Kent, UK for the treatment of certain heart conditions. But as it turned out, sildenafil could successfully induce erections in men. Following this groundbreaking discovery, sildenafil was approved by the FDA for commercial use in 1998.
How does an erection occur?
When you are sexually stimulated, your brain signals the penile nerves to produce nitric oxide (NO). Production of NO in the nerve cells of the penis stimulates an enzyme known as guanylate cyclase, which then starts producing cGMP, a chemical responsible for the relaxation of arterial smooth muscles in the penis. And when penile muscles relax, more blood flows into the penis, helping you achieve an erection.
How does sildenafil work?
When a natural erection does not occur, there are three ways to induce one:
- Increasing the production of NO in the penis
- Increasing the production of cGMP
- Inhibiting the action of PDE-5 which breaks down cGMP
Viagra sildenafil follows the 3rd method. It gets rid of PDE-5 so that more cGMP can build up in the penis, causing relaxation of the arterial blood vessels and increasing blood flow into the penis. So effectively, sildenafil is a selective PDE inhibitor. There are at least 11 types of PDEs in the human body, but sildenafil acts on only one to help in impotence treatment.
What are the dosages of Viagra?
The blue pill comes in 3 different strengths – 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. The 50mg dose is recommended for most men, to be taken an hour before starting sexual activities. The right dose depends on factors such as your age and existing health conditions, if any. The pill starts taking effect in 30 minutes for most people, lasting for up to 4 hours. Viagra is only available on prescription, so you need to consult a registered doctor before using it.
Watch out for your safety
Viagra does not give you an erection spontaneously or boost your libido like an aphrodisiac. Most importantly, the famous blue pill is available only on a valid prescription. So whenever you come across something called the generic Viagra or a ‘soft tab’ or ‘chewable tab’, watch out for its genuineness.
